Guide to selecting the appropriate Doppler Motion Detector Unit

There are many criteria that need to be considered in selecting the appropriate Doppler Motion Detector Unit for your application.

This page is designed to help you make the selection as fast as possible.

Interchangeability

If you expect to sell your product (once approved) in a number of countries, choose styles that are physically interchangeable, so you can select a different module at a later date if you need to obtain approval in a different country. This approach will minimise the changes to your design needed to accommodate modules meeting the different standards. It will also minimise your approval costs.

Country

MSL products are designed to meet two basic sets of international standards, the European Community EN 300 440 requirements and the US FCC Part 15 requirements. Note that most countries adopt one or other of these standards, but see below for notable exceptions. You need to verify the standards adopted in the country you will sell your product, but the following table can be used as a broad guideline. MSL products are categorised by which of these basic sets of standards they meet. In general if a product meets the EN 300 440 requirements it will exceed the FCC Part 15:245 requirements. The reverse is NOT true. A product specified as meeting the FCC Part15:245 requirements will NOT meet the EN 300 440 specification.  Each country specifies their own approved frequency range(s) and MSL products are available to satisfy most of the common frequency allocations within the ranges specified here.

Japan.

Although Japan has their own standard for licence exempt microwave transmitters, MSL products that meet the EN 300 440 standard will, in general, meet the Japanese requirement. Contact us for more details if you intend to sell your product in Japan.

USA.

The USA distinguishes between indoor and outdoor applications. Modules identified as meeting the US FCC Part 15 requirements meet only the indoor requirements. Depending on the details of your application, modules that meet the EN 300 440 specification may meet the FCC outdoor requirements.

Approval Standard

Knowing the countries where you intend to sell your product will identify the style and type of module you need to consider. If you intend to sell your product in countries that require both standards, choose either the EN 300 440 version or select physically interchangeable versions.

Test Reports are available for all of the EN 300 440 standard modules. These may be suitable for inclusion in your Technical Construction File (TCF) as evidence that the product meets the radio emission requirements for CE marking. Contact MSL for copies of these reports

Physical Environment

The different families of modules are designed to operate in different environments. The pcb style modules are designed primarily for fixed indoor applications. The plastic moulded and small ETS styles are suitable for use either indoors or outdoors.

Coverage Pattern

Most standard products have an antenna coverage pattern of 72° by 36°. These will provide a full 90° coverage when mounted in the corner of a rectangular room.

Ceiling Mount units are also available which provide a circular footprint if mounted on the ceiling of a room.

Alternative antenna configurations are available to provide narrower coverage patterns. Please contact MSL for details.

Price sensitive applications

The pcb style modules are particularly cost effective and should be selected for price sensitive applications. Note this style of module is currently only available to meet the US FCC Part 15 requirement.
